Joel Anthony’s The Sober Sessions
I first came across Anthony’s writing after I was diagnosed with cirrhosis and made the decision to quit drinking cold turkey.
It was a scary and lonely time. I was trying to understand how my life had gotten to that point and what I was supposed to do next.
I started reading J. Anthony’s writing every day.
There were times when something he wrote seemed to speak directly to whatever I was wrestling with that day. Sometimes it honestly felt like Jesus had put those words in front of me because He knew I needed to hear them.
His writing gave me clarity. More importantly, it reminded me that I wasn’t alone.
Eventually, it helped inspire me to start putting my own story into words.
That story became my book, Something Only God Could Do.
Kevin Lawson
Kevin Lawson’s videos really helped me when I was in the thick of struggle. He often talks about the road ahead, which helped me start seeing the bright side of my new path forward.
When I first stopped drinking, I tried to continue the same lifestyle—go to the same bars, hang out with the same people—just without the alcohol. But I quickly realized that something else would have to change.
Quitting drinking didn’t make my childhood trauma go away. In fact, without alcohol to numb everything, it became even harder to ignore.
Having Kevin’s videos to turn to helped give me hope that there was something on the other side of all of this. I wasn’t just giving up alcohol; I was building a different life.
When you’re in the thick of it, it can be hard to imagine that road ahead. Sometimes you need to hear from someone who has walked it before you and can remind you to keep going.
Kevin was one of those people for me.
